Motherhood: The Sacred Duty

When mothering gets tough we would be wise to remember this--

“O dear mothers, you have a very sacred trust reposed in you by God!

He hath in effect said to you, “Take this child and nurse it for Me, and I will give thee thy wages.” You are called to equip the future man of God, that he may be thoroughly furnished unto every good work. If God spares you, you may live to hear that pretty boy speak to thousands, and you will have the sweet reflection in your heart that the quiet teachings of the nursery led the man to love his God and serve Him.

Those who think that a woman detained at home by her little family is doing nothing, think the reverse of what is true. Scarcely can the godly mother quit her home for a place of worship; but dream not that she is lost to the work of the church; far from it, she is doing the best possible service for her Lord.

Mothers, the godly training of your offspring is your first and most pressing duty.”

~Charles Spurgeon

Reformation Day Faire 2011

Our family recently attended the Reformation Day Faire in Morton, Illinois hosted by Providence Church. I wanted to share a few pictures and video of our weekend with you:

Great speakers included Pastor James McDonald, Marcus Serven, and Bill Potter

The church put up castle wall on their church and recreated a historical Town Square
(click on the picture or any other to view larger images)

Many lovely maidens could be found...

Boffer wars were enjoyed by the boys, here are the younger boys participating, then they had they older boys and then the men go against eachother on teams. They also had a Caber toss and other engaging games of the era.

Beautiful hand made decor and great vendors were on hand...

They had singing, psalmody instruction, a talented quartet and Nathan George Clark perform.

Mr. Candler teaching how to dip candles and other tables were available along with real leather stamping, coloring, chess, etc.

Only a few pictures were taken of me--here they caught me (on the right)  chatting with my friend, Dinora Ruiz.

They served hot cocoa outdoors and had an special dinner courtesy of Stacy McDonald and her hardworking team

Here is some dancing outdoors to Scottish bagpipes...just lovely!

They held the Reformation ball dancing at a gym this year and the Duff sisters called the dances. We were blessed to stay with them at the hospitable home of the sweet Bandy family.

Thank you for looking at our pictures!

Big Announcement--New Church Plant!

We waited...

For years and years...

And now we are so happy to see the dream become a reality!

We are excited to announce our new church plant---

Right now it is in the beginning stages, we have our core families, and we are so excited to see what the Lord is going to do! He is Mighty, He is Worthy, and may He be glorified through it all! Our heart is to see Christ exalted, families strengthened and discipled, and for the lost to be saved.

Last year I had written a post about finding churches and SO many of you responded saying how hard it was to find a church and how difficult it was to find like-minded fellowship for your families--so I gave a listing for the National Center of Family Integrated Churches, we are now officially on that list and want to reach out to you!

You can view New Hope's official website HERE.

We will add a blog to the site soon!

We are also having a major event on November 6th called the First Thanksgiving Celebration, that I would like to invite you to,  we will have

  • Hayrides
  • Wood splitting
  • Bonfire
  • Boffer Wars (for Boys)
  • English-country dancing (for Girls)
  • Highland Games (Caber and Rock Toss)
-and dress up like pilgrim and Indians (this is optional) and eat period food! You are welcome to join us and can confirm at our Facebook Event Page --if you think you can come please confirm on this page so we can have a head count as there are already several families attending!

We hope that if you are in the area that you would come visit us-- we are located in Northwest Indiana and only 30 minutes from Chicago. Here is a map.

New Hope also has an official Facebook Fan page  that you can follow to keep up with the latest happenings, announcements, and events of our new church.

I will share more details about the church in the future!

If you have any questions about the church we would be happy to answer them. You can leave a comment here or email us privately at newhopeindiana@gmail.com

We'd love to hear from you!

Have a blessed day!

Simple Pumpkin Muffin Recipe and Giveaway Winners

The other morning we made pumpkin muffins for breakfast and they were deliciously moist and  yummy. The exciting part is we only used TWO ingredients!!! Yes, just two--take a look above, just cake mix and canned pumpkin!

You whip this all together and bake--so simple and I just love how easy it is. No eggs, no water, no spices and wonderful results.  Even your most cooking challenged child could ace this one. Get the directions here. (I found it through Pinterest!) It tasted just as good as Starbucks pumpkin muffins and you could dust it with powdered sugar like we did or use a cream cheese frosting to top it off with. I would even throw in chocolate chips! She also made them with chocolate cake mix---mmmm, I will definitely have to try that.

And as for all those giveaways we had last week--
there is so little time and SO many gifts to give away...

The winner for the It's a Blessing giveaway is:
Jackie Rhode-princessinchrist@

for the Lilla Rose giveaway is:

for the The Modest Mom giveaway is:

Mothers, You are Building Cultures, Societies, and Kingdoms

Mothers, take heart.

You are building cultures, societies, and kingdoms while you are training those little people within your home. No matter what, someone is going to train them. Our rotten culture didn't come out of nowhere. It came because Christian families forsook their first duty and abandoned their homes to the enemy.

Let us return to our home and rebuild a vision for godly descendants that stretches into the future...

If we want wholehearted womanhood to become reality again, we must be willing to forsake the glittering paths of fame, recognition and celebrity. If we want beautiful girlhood for our young ladies--a time of innocence, joy and delight in service--then we must be willing to demonstrate it in our homes and live it beautifully for the watching world.

We are daughters of the King!
We are building a kingdom that will have no end.
We are shaping cultures--for good or ill--as we go about our daily tasks.
Let us purpose to follow Christ wholeheartedly, embracing  the servanthood He demonstrated to us.

Let us purpose to put to death the grasping desire for fame
that our godless culture has raised up as its idol
Let us be women of purpose and vision, serving Christ from hearts that overflow
with love for His people and for the lost.

--essay from Jennie Chancey,
Queen of the Home by Jen McBride

As you can tell, I just received my copy of Queen of the Home in the mail and I MUST say this book should be mandatory for every Christian bookshelf. This book gives vision, guidance, hope and encouragement to embrace noble Christian womanhood and reject what the culture has to offer so much so that I am making sure that even my grandchildren get a copy of it--and not just because I have contributed to it--but because the wisdom and vision in it is priceless.

Thank you, sweet Jen, for putting together such a treasure trove!

Have a blessed day building up kingdoms!

Will We Fight For Them?

Today's we are featuring a guest post by Michelle from  She Looketh Well...

I had quite a sobering conversation in my head yesterday.

Yesterday I sort of reached the ‘end’ of my limit with a certain teenage son, who simply is going through what I would call typical ‘growing up pains’.  Each of his brothers before him did too, I know this, but somehow forget and get frustrated.

My normal M.O. is to just get ticked and say, ‘fine, figure it out on your own then.’  (yes, I know not so spiritual nor mature)  I want to just wash my hands of the whole stinkin’ mess.
Well, I called Brian, ranted something about ‘just being done with him’.  I believe I let him know that this particular son was HIS, and I was just done.  He, of course, was shocked by my words and encouraged (begged) me to stop the foolishness coming out of my mouth.  I just sat there and stewed while he talked.

When we got off the phone I went about my business, still stewing and a brewing, repeating my above foolishness in my head.  What I heard next just about stopped my in my tracks, literally.

“So, you’re done?  Well, you might as well be putting him right into the hands of the enemy.”  Giant gulp!  I literally could picture just handing my son over to the enemy because I was too selfish, lazy and prideful to deal with everyday issues!  Ugh, it pains me now to even think about it.

Roaring-African-Lion

If we don’t fight for our children, who will?  There is an enemy who prowls around seeking whom he may destroy.  He comes to steal, kill and destroy.  A very REAL vicious, relentless killer after our children and I am willing to just say, ‘forget it, too hard, don’t want to deal with this today’???

NO!!  I am not willing to give up!  I choose to fight with every ounce of my being.  I will not let the enemy take my children on my watch.  If we don’t fight for them, who will, ladies, who will?

Yep, I repented yesterday.  I told God I see that I am wrong, I don’t really have the fight and the love in me to battle this, but I know that He does and I am counting on HIM to equip me.

Let the very cry of our hearts be . . .

Therefore I endure all things for the elect's sakes, that they may also obtain the salvation which is in Christ Jesus with eternal glory. (2 Timothy 2:10)

May we be willing to endure ALL things for our children’s sake!

Thank you, Michelle for your encouraging words to keeping us focused on fighting for our children!
You are a blessing!

Teaching Them Scripture

"I know I need to do it, to teach my children the Bible and have them learn Bible verses but I just don't do it. I am overwhelmed with all the other responsibilities of cleaning the house, caring for my husband, making meals, changing diapers, and homeschooling that I often forget what I know is most important--teaching them to memorize God's word in their heart. Do you have any suggestions?"

I am often asked all kinds of important questions on a daily basis and this is one I feel that is quite a common struggle for moms across the board. We have good intentions, but life somehow seems to get in the way.

This is a powerful time in a child's life to intentionally sow plentiful seed in your child's heart for the kingdom. So we need to make sure that the time we get with them is used wisely.

In the past I had tried numerous ideas. We always try to teach the Bible through how we live, when we rise up and through the day. We do Bible studies in the morning and sometimes at night. We try to make it fun for them as we try to be godly examples.  The thing I was challenged most with was how to help them learn verses and to hide the word in their heart.  I had created a "Bible Sword" binder that was full of verses I had handpicked and taught them to my children over the meal table. I had also did memorization from the Bible in Proverbs and we would try to learn the verses that way with me putting them on the school board and practicing them over different meal times. I used videos (like this or this) and music CD's and even hung up Bible verses in their room and around the house.

Now I am doing something that I am really happy about and seems to be working well. With my other methods, it seemed to require more time from me (to pick out verses and teach) and all of the children were not at the same pace (some would learn it right away, some would take longer) and then things would slowly start to fizzle out as it was not as easy to stay on top of who was where. I needed something simpler!

So now I have them do this:

During school I assign them some "copy-work time", this where they work on their handwriting/cursive skills. I will ask a child to pick a verse or two from the Bible that they want to copy/enjoy/or like and they have to write it in their best handwriting. Not only do they write it out but they are also asked to memorize it. When they are done they bring it to me for checking and recite their verse(s). They can take a break or go play after they have done this as this is usually one of their last classes. I am telling you, I have never seen children learn verses so quickly on a daily basis in my life!!!  With older children you could do several verses, a paragraph, or entire chapters.

So there it is---so simple but so easy. I wish I had done this early on instead of trying to do it as a group. Perhaps it will work for you too!

Oh, and don't feel guilty about popping in a video or using CD's to help with this--sometimes they learn or retain even better that way (moms are too hard on themselves in this category and yes--we have also done AWANA, but wanted to do more at home). My attitude about it is get it in them by any means necessary! Just be careful as some movies are not biblically accurate and that is a great time to teach them about being like the Bereans and to check everything according to scripture.

Have you ever read the book, Ten P's in Pod This is a true story about a large family of missionaries traveled around the U.S. living in their car spreading the word of the gospel and their children memorized whole books of the Bible--VERY inspiring!

Last night we had some fun as my sons practiced preaching for the family, the smallest ones who are the twins and only five, were able to practice "preaching" too by sharing stories they had learned from some movies they've watched in the past since they cannot read yet. It was so cute, and they were all rewarded with jelly beans afterwards! Even if my boys do not become preachers one day, they will be the spiritual leaders of their homes and this helps them to get used to sharing God's Word with others.

How do you teach your children to memorize scripture?

She Speaks with Wisdom

"She speaks with wisdom, and faithful instruction is on her tongue."
 Proverbs 31:26

Are you like me and somedays forget about this verse?  Perhaps you let something unwise or unkind roll off your tongue that you regretted as soon as it came out? I am thankful for this reminder in the Bible, because I know that women benefit from the wise instruction in it.

There are so many things that can cause a women to say unwise things. I have realized, (especially when I was young mother) if I am not taking every thought captive to Jesus Christ that I am easy prey to failing in this area--and I know that many of you would agree with me! Our minds can delve deep into the muck and mire of ungodly thinking if we are not on our toes and on guard.

But what is being entertained in the heart?

"The good man brings good things out of the good stored up in his heart, and the evil man brings evil things out of the evil stored up in his heart. For out of the overflow of his heart his mouth speaks." Luke 6:45.

Here are some examples of thinking that get us off the path:

1. He makes me so mad, Lord, why am I married to Him?

2. Lord you have given me too much to do with the children and the house--I can't handle all this.

3. We never have enough money ( then become fearful of the future-which might lead to arguing with husbands, getting upset at the children or at God).

When instead we need to think:

1.  God, thank you for my husband, he is not perfect and neither am I. Thank you for the opportunity to show your grace to him during difficult times. (Ephesians 4:32) Help me to love him the way you loved me especially when I was unlovable.

2. Lord, thank you for my children and home. There are others out there who give their left arm for what I have. I refuse to believe the lies of thinking I can't handle this. You have equipped me and I trust you. I know that you are by my side and that I can handle all things through you. (Phillipians 4:13) I will take the day slowly, patiently, and wisely, not looking at other homes or comparing myself to other moms--just following your lead every step of the way.

3. God is my provider and I will trust in His provision. He always provides for me and I will trust in Him. (Psalm 23:1)  Satan wants me fearful, he wants to disarm me as a mother and get me focused on my fear  so that I cannot function well in my home and even allow it to hinder my relationships in my family. I will not let fear or Satan immobilize me, but will trust God with the future for He is my provider and owns a cattle on a thousand hills. (Psalm 50:10)

Dear ladies, it is SO important to take every thought captive (2 Corinthians 10:5)! Wrong thinking can plant bad seed into our hearts. The flesh is weak (Matthew 26:41) and Satan seeks to steal, kill, and destroy (John 10:10). This means he hates you, your children, your marriage, your home and your attempts to leave a godly heritage and will use any open door in your life to sneak his way in to do his dirty work. We are protected as we use the Word of God as a shield to our minds, our hearts, and to our home. We need to identify when we are even thinking wrong thoughts and filter all thinking though the grid of Scripture.

The danger of not taking every thought captive is insurmountable. Wives stray from their husbands, homes, and from their God as a result of entertaining ungodly thoughts and need to be brought back to the proper thinking in truth (practicing sober-mindedness-Titus 2:3-5) and the reality and power of God's Word.

As we learn to think righteously-- we replace our old thinking with the new and our old way of talking with "speaking with wisdom, and faithful instruction" on our tongues. In this, we can be...

a light on a hill,

a woman who builds up,

teaching the younger women through our example,

and be found faithful rightly raising up the next generation of godly seed.

It's Here!

The new Vision Forum catalog is now available!

I *love* how they ALWAYS have a noble theme to their covers.

When we get our catalog the children rush try to read it before we get a chance to, I am so glad they are interested in wholesome resources that help BUILD UP OUR HOME instead of tearing it down. I've also heard of other households the children do this too and yes--sometimes we have to be QUICK and hide it in our room so us parents will even get a chance to read it!

If you'd like to get a catalog, you can get it here.
(It's FREE!)

As you know, I cannot recommend them highly enough, we also do alot of our Christmas shopping there since we know the things we get there will have a huge spiritual impact on our home in the future. They have also added tons of new homeschool resources as well that I will be checking out for to add to our school year and for next.

Did you get yours yet?

Apple-licous! Homemaking Memories in the Kitchen and MORE

Now that we have done a post for fall about serving food inside of pumpkins, now I thought it would also be a good time to have a little inspiration with apples since it is apple picking time and you can get them super cheap. I like these ideas because they can make the ordinary homemaker feel like she has a few tricks up her sleeve to liven up  kitchen and  family meal table.

I really loved this idea, Mr. Fuentes just loves ice cream AND caramel and what a cute way to use up all those extra apples!

Get your best apple cider recipe (or just buy some at the store and heat) and serve it in these pretty apple cups!

Make the kids something fun--instead of regular sandwiches try an apple creation instead!

We can't forget apple dippin',

This grilled apple bacon cheese sandwich is a favorite at our home. We usually like to have it on the first day of fall. It tastes delicious and super simple to make. If you don't have bacon on hand, you can also use bacon bits.

A few days ago my daughter made some homemade pie from apple picking at the orchard. We kept the apple peels and tossed them in cinnamon and sugar and baked them at 350 degrees for 20 minutes No waste and tasted great!

All of the recipe links for the images above can be found over at my Fall Pinterest Board.

Speaking of cooking--DID YOU KNOW that Homestead Blessings came out with a new cookbook?

The Homestead Blessings Cookbook-$20
We loved their DVD series, so was so glad to see they actually have a new cookbook available now!

Also here is a peek of some of the new products in the  Vision Forum store that will be in the 2012 catalog:

by Doug and Beall Phillips -$45
Set of 10 CD's--These were fantastic and I highly recommend them!

Becoming a Woman of God Series--$25
This looks interesting...especially the one on excellence.

$15 This is even being sold as a set with her matching CD set.

The Handmade Market Place: How to Sell Your Crafts Locally, Globally and Online-$13

This is definitely for the industrious woman--I would love to get this for my daughters to read through!

You have to see the lineup of toys they have this year for boys--
Oh my!
They must've known that I have FIVE sons.
I think I am going to have to hide my Vision Forum catalog away from them this year!

Announcing New Book: Queen of the Home {& Giveaway!}

I am SOOOOO pleased and excited to announce the release of the NEW book, Queen of the Home: Essays, Poetry and Quotes on the Honor, Power and Nobility of Biblical Womanhood, compiled by Jen McBride of Noble Womanhood, over at Vision Forum.

Here is a description of the book:

In past generations, the role of wife and mother was viewed as a sacred calling. The committed homemaker was seen as strong, capable, intelligent, and irreplaceable. She was regarded not only as a crucial part of the home, but as a foundational bulwark of society. She was considered worthy of great honor, appreciation, and respect. Though in recent years feminists have sought to demean this glorious calling, the Bible’s hopeful vision of noble womanhood is one worth reclaiming. Queen of the Home seeks to cast that vision afresh through godly encouragements from writers past and present. This inspiring collection of essays, poetry, and poignant vignettes paints a beautiful picture of what it means for a wife to be a crown to her husband, the monarch of the cradle, and queen of the home, and calls upon daughters to embrace their rewarding role and sacred calling as regal women of God.

WOW! Doesn't this book sound great? There's MORE--essays and or quotes included by the following:

Jennie Chancey
Stacy McDonald
Beall Phillips
Doug Phillips
Kelly Crawford
Becky Morecraft
Nancy Campbell
Karen Andreola
...and me!

Jen contacted me earlier this year about using some of my writings and I was honored to be asked--so this is the first time my writing will officially be published in a book! (Can you guess what all my friends are getting for Christmas?) Not only that but Jen has also included poetry, essays, etc. from inspiring writers from the past as well.

Here are some excerpts:

Although Feminism continues her barrage against Biblical womanhood, we must refuse to heed her lies anymore. Let us victoriously reclaim our thrones for the sake of our families, the advancement of Christs Kingdom, generations yet to come, and the glory of God." ~ From the Introduction by Jen McBride

"Refreshing and motivating, this book is exactly what every mom needs on her desk or nightstand for those moments during the day when we could use an energy boost! Jennifer's book contains my favorite passages of inspiration. Read and be encouraged!" ~ Beall Phillips (from the back cover)

"Queen of the Home reminds us of our birthright as women, and it is a rich and beautiful one. In the beginning, God set Adam and Eve as king and queen over creation. They were designed to complement one another. It wasn't good for man to be alone, as God Himself stated. Man needed woman to complete him as his perfect helper. Without woman, godly dominion simply could not take place. With his helper, Adam could tend and keep the garden, drawing on Eve's gifts and abilities and being fruitful as God commanded. The fall harmed that perfect union and distorted the mysterious and holy marriage relationship, but Christ's finished work on the cross redeems us from the fall and calls us back to co-laboring as husbands and wives, each with important roles to fulfill as we serve the Lord. In turn, our laboring together in harmony presents a picture of Christ and His bride, the Church. What a glorious calling!

Jennifer McBride has given us a powerful dose of inspiration and vision in this volume. I am thankful for her willingness to put it together, and I look forward to sharing it with family and friends. I pray you will be blessed as you enjoy these pages and meditate on the importance of the amazing, multi-faceted role God has given you. You are queen of your home! May your home reflect the glory and goodness of the God Who placed you there." ~ From the Foreword by Jennie Chancey

The chapter titles are as follows:

Noble Womanhood
The King's Daughters
Queen of the Home
Monarch of the Cradle
The Power of Parenthood

Now for the exciting part! We are going to have a giveaway! Oh YES!!!

At The Modest Mom you will find long skirts that are beautiful, and fashionable. Be assured, wearing lovely clothes is still an option for moms and moms to be. Your satisfaction is our desire."

The Modest Mom also has some more new pretties in their store:

The Michelle Dress

The Nantucket Denim Skirt
