Meekness is Beauty

Meekness is especially, in the Scripture, commended to women. Again, as we're thinking of why pursue meekness, as women it's natural for us, and our culture really promotes this, to focus on physical beauty—on external adorning, on our hairstyles, on our clothing styles, our jewelry, our makeup. These are the things, if you look at advertisements for women, that are being promoted and advertised as being really important.

But God's Word has some right counsel for us as women. It helps us to see beauty from God's perspective. In 1 Peter chapter 3, verse 4, where the apostle says, "Let your adorning [let the thing that you consider attractive and beautiful] be the hidden person of the heart with the imperishable beauty [I love that phrase] of a gentle and quiet spirit, which in God's sight is very precious.

A gentle spirit. That word in the original language is meek.

A meek spirit,
a gentle spirit,
a quiet spirit.

Scripture says for a woman to have that internal heart attitude of meekness or gentleness and a quiet spirit gives her a beauty that is imperishable. It's a beauty that cannot fade away.

It's a beauty that you don't have to go through all kinds of cosmetic surgery or makeup routines to preserve. It's something that gets sweeter and richer and more beautiful as you age.

Quietness in the Everyday

“Be still, and know that I am God.
I will be exalted among the nations,
I will be exalted in the earth!"

-Psalm 46:10

As we wake up and face the Monday morning rush, I want to share about something that is important for our hearts and souls--finding the quietness in the everyday.

I have found that it is easy to start the day off finding quietness in my household by doing a few simple things. I can start my day off with prayer--quiet prayer between me and the Lord. Seeking that time of "being still" and not having a hurried heart or an anxious heart is a wonderful way to start the week.

I also make sure to get time in the Word-- to really reflect and meditate on its meaning. No pressure to perform just rolling it around in my spirit and refreshing my soul with it. I find when I don't take the time to do this, my day can be sorely lacking.

Soft music, usually Pandora, in the background and glowing lights from my silk tree in the corner of my bedroom. The aroma of hot steaming coffee on my nightstand.

While the week of Easter lies ahead and promises to be a very busy, I want to make sure I connect with the Lord at a heart level, to fill my cup and let it be over flowing to my household today and the rest of the week.

No rushing, no frantic pace---no pressure.

Just me and the Lord.

Listening to His voice, His direction.

Have you had your special time with Him this morning?

Feminine Godliness

I love getting a Christian man's perspective on femininity because it is often a convicting and great reminder of what God truly values.

Today my husband, Steve, has written a guest post for sweet Jasmine over at Far Above Rubies entitled:

I hope you enjoy it!

A Woman of Discretion

Are we training ourselves to be women of discretion?

Women today would be wise to use their speech well. Careful before they say anything, prayerful before giving counsel or a rebuke, with the Lord leading every step of  the way.

Titus 2:5 exhorts: :

"That they may teach the young women to be sober, to love their husbands, to love their children, to be discreet, chaste, keepers at home, good, obedient to their own husbands, that the word of God be not blasphemed."

The word discreet comes from the greek word: sóphrón

Here is the definition:
of sound mind, self-controlled, temperate, sober-minded, modest, chaste

We are warned against idleness and being busybodies, and why--because there is a struggle. We need to embrace a quiet life without busying ourselves with meddling, gossip, and vain pursuits (1 Thess 4:11).  Older woman must teach the younger, to be wise in situations. There should not be a judging of situations lest we know all the facts. Self control must rule us, we must gain hold of it, our tongues and our sinful flesh.

What does God uphold and view as beautiful?

A wife of noble character who can find? She is worth far more than rubies. Proverbs 31:10

Do not let your adorning be external—the braiding of hair and the putting on of gold jewelry, or the clothing you wear— but let your adorning be the hidden person of the heart with the imperishable beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit, which in God’s sight is very precious. 1 Peter 3:4

The tongue:

And the tongue is a fire, the very world of iniquity; the tongue is set among our members as that which defiles the entire body, and sets on fire the course of our life, and is set on fire by hell. For every species of beasts and birds, of reptiles and creatures of the sea, is tamed and has been tamed by the human race. But no one can tame the tongue; it is a restless evil and full of deadly poison. With it we bless our Lord and Father, and with it we curse men, who have been made in the likeness of God; from the same mouth come both blessing and cursing. My brethren, these things ought not to be this way. Does a fountain send out from the same opening both fresh and bitter water? Can a fig tree, my brethren, produce olives, or a vine produce figs? Nor can salt water produce fresh. James 3:6

A gentle answer turns away wrath, but a harsh word stirs up anger. Proverbs 15:1

The wise of heart is called discerning, and sweetness of speech increases persuasiveness. Proverbs 16:21

Oh my, I know we all fail at times, and sometimes miserably--there is not a single one of us that is perfect! We would not need Jesus if we were perfect. I think in many cases, we need to humble ourselves and our speech will follow. How often I have looked back in different situations and thought at how humility needed to be a vital part of the equation.

 And we chase after wisdom:

Wisdom is supreme; therefore get wisdom. Though it cost all you have, get understanding.  -Proverbs 4:7

How much better to get wisdom than gold! To get understanding is to be chosen rather than silver. -Proverbs 16:16

It is my prayer that we start this week NEW,
recommitting ourselves to CHRIST,
and striving to become a vessel that God can fully use for His KINGDOM.

Meekness

Meekness, to me, is  fascinating and today I share some quotes to look deeper at the topic:

Meekness is power under control.   -Warren Wiersbe

Meekness is not to be confused with weakness: the meek are not simply submissive because they lack the resources to be anything else. Meekness is quite compatible with great strength and ability as humans measure strength, but whatever strength or weakness the meek person has is accompanied by humility and a genuine dependence on God. True meekness may be a quality of the strong, those who could assert themselves but choose not to do so.  --Leon Morris

Perhaps no grace is less prayed for, or less cultivated than gentleness. Indeed it is considered rather as belonging to natural disposition or external manners, than as a Christian virtue; and seldom do we reflect that not to be gentle is sin.  -Bethune

The higher people are in the favor of God, the more tender they are.--Martin Luther

Rudeness, yelling, anger, and swearing are a weak man’s imitation of strength.
- Author Unknown

The meek man is not a human mouse afflicted with a sense of his own inferiority.  Rather he may be in his moral life as bold as a lion and as strong as Samson; but he has stopped being fooled about himself.  He has accepted God’s estimate of his own life.  He knows he is as weak and helpless as God declared him to be, but paradoxically, he knows at the same time that he is in the sight of God of more importance than angels.  In himself, nothing; in God, everything.  That is his motto.-- A.W. Tozer

Making Time to Be Still

He says, “Be still, and know that I am God;
I will be exalted among the nations,
I will be exalted in the earth.” Psalm 46:10

Too often we allow the voices of the world to distract us and keep us off focus of the things that truly matter.

We need to be aware of that with all the busyness and comforts that we have today we can easily crowd out God's voice.

We need to away from those things that can distract and carve out time to just be quiet and still.
(yes, even with a busy schedule or a full household!)

If we constantly have noise all around us or are busy doing, doing, doing, we can lose something very precious a treasure that was meant for us alone.

Go ahead--turn off the music, the TV, the computer...

Drown out all the voices, the heartache, the pain

Embrace and cherish the time you get with Him.

Speak to the Lord and lift up your fears.

Meditate on His Word. Connect with Him.

Let Him comfort you and reach the deepest places of your heart--the untouched places.

He is the great Transformer, the Giver of Life.

If He is urging you to do something, to take action--

obey and listen.

JUST DO IT!

He is worthy to be exalted

and to Him all glory and praise!
