Homeschooling on a Small Budget

Times are tough for many and paying for expensive homeschool curriculum can sometimes be very daunting for a homeschooling mom. Just today I was talking to someone on the phone who called for advice of where to get curriculum  that would to fit a tight budget . Here are a couple of thoughts:

1. Ebay--For years I would find my usually expensive curriculum way cheaper at Ebay. Teachers guides/textbooks and answer keys are also a wonderful find here!

2. Craigslist--Check out their book, garage sale, and free section.

3. Amazon--Amazon has great items at often rock bottom prices that you can find used. Click here for homeschool curriculum  and school supplies.

4. Garage Sales--Several times I have found other homeschooling families who have had sales in my area who were getting rid of some of their books. I was able to purchase whole boxes of items--what a steal! Be sure to go when teachers are having sales too, you can find all kinds of great teaching supplies.

5.  Homeschool Support Group--Moms in your support group are great for selling off their unneeded books. If you have a homeschool support group you could also do a book swap and/or ask a mom to let your borrow some books for a  year.

6. Online Groups--I am part of a Facebook Homeschool trading and selling group and there is so much available at such low prices!

7. Homeschool Used Curriculum Book Sales--Find out when these are in your area and save the date. Come prepared with list in hand of what you need and be ready to make a killing.

8. Homeschool Conferences--There are booths set up at these conferences that sell used curriculum and they also usually have a table for moms to sell their used curriculum. Be sure to check it all out and compare. Sometimes they will even have FREE boxes.

9. Library--Of course it is a great place to check out all kinds of items you need from books, audio and video--but also don't forget to find out when their used book sales are on. We have purchased loads of books and readers this way, all no more than a quarter each and sometimes less than that. At my library we have access to several other local libraries in the area and can request items from all of them.

10. Design Your Own--With the availability of the internet today, many ambitious moms are taking on the task of designing their own curriculum with low or no cost. Here is a book that I recommend which talks a bit about that: Homeschooling on a Shoe String.

11. Free Websites--There are free websites like Ambleside Online one that help you teach your children through the years.

12. Thrift Stores-I have heard of mothers finding workbooks, classics, art supplies and all kinds of other things here. One mother had found a math workbook for just 20 cents for her fifth grader!

13. Sell Your Books--List your unneeded homeschool items on websites to make back some extra money to buy new books/supplies for the following year. I would also hold a garage sale in the summer for this very purpose.

14. Think Outside the Box--Don't feel pressured to just use what you see in the glossy homeschool catalogs. Be creative--there is always more than one way to skin a cat! Are there books already available in your home to teach a subject? Are there printables online you could use to teach a concept? I have heard of one mom who fell on hard times and used her older childrens old workbooks for her younger children by typing the lesson for the day on her computer and printing them out as new. Smart!

15. Bonus Tip--if you are a blogger you might want to consider approaching a company and exchange advertising for free curriculum or ask to do a review of an item you are interested in. (If you want to learn how to advertise on your blog, click here, I am having a sale!)

And might I also add that the most important thing that you should also do before anything here on the list is to PRAY!

I assure you that God has answered
many a homeschooling mothers prayers and needs.

A helpful book I highly recommend would be:

This book has lots of great ideas and you can get a used copy for as low as a penny!

What other ideas would you add?

We Cannot Remain Silent

We must not allow the voices of the world
to set the agenda for this decade,
nor must we allow those voices to teach women how to be women.

Christian women must speak with boldness and clarity about womanhoood
and must live distinctly Christian lives.
Christian women must articulate a Biblical world and life view
and the implications of this perspective for women.

...Today many women are buying into New Age philosophies
because they are looking for hope in their hopelessness.

We must not abandon these women.
We must come alongside and encourage and equip them to live for God's glory...

But we cannot do it by remaining silent.

We must speak the words of life.

Raising Sons to Value Good Character

"The greatest investment a boy can make is in Godly character. One may have physical strength, bodily, health, a large bank account, and mental brilliancy, but if he is without sound character he never can become a great man of God. A good character makes a good man. A great character makes a great man. A Godly character makes a Godly man. But it can not be inherited, be handed down by father to son, nor be bought for a price. It must be built by choice and effort. Reputation is what we appear to be; character is what we are. A reputation may be lost in a moment, or in a single act; character will stand the test of time. Reputation is the shadow; character is the substance.

The world greatest need is men of right character on the farm, in the workshop, behind the counter, in the profession, the pulpit and the pew. Great and good men are needed in all walks of life."

This is an excerpt of the book
Personal Help for Boys
Building a Foundation of Godly Character for Tomorrow's Men
by the Pearables that my oldest son is currently reading through.

Many mothers feel it can be a struggle raising sons at times--
God has made them unique and ready to take dominion.

Boys will make mistakes, like all children will,
but we need to share the patience of the Father with them.

And when we make mistakes as imperfect parents,
we need to model humility and ask for forgiveness.

It is my hearts prayer that my five sons will truly learn what godly character is from a young age. While we try to model godliness, have available other godly role models, study and teach them the word of God-- we know that only God can lasso the heart, and that is the case for all children, and it is the prayer for each of my children.

"Sons are a heritage from the Lord, children a reward from Him."
Psalm 127:3

We need to encourage them daily in doing what is right without growing weary ourselves.

"Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up."
Galations 6:9

Peacemakers who sow in peace raise a harvest of righteousness.
James 3:18

Saying a special prayer for all of our sons today...

Encouragement for Discouraged Mothers Battling Illness

Two years ago I woke up on New Years day with a high fever--from that day on began a long three month journey of illness that turned our entire household upside down. I was confined to a couch/bed and could barely walk or speak. The Lord had taught me so many valuable lessons at the time, especially how fragile life was and not to take health for granted. If you are going through something difficult like this in your life, battling with chronic illness or just being sick for a period of time, I know you can relate and I know what it is like. I came across an article from Noble Womanhood that I thought would encourage you.

Jen writes:

"If I can do nothing more than lay in bed I can do it with a good attitude and  a smile for them when they come in the room. I can still provide a happy atmosphere in the home.  I can avoid complaining, I can praise them for the extra work they have to do while Mommy is sick, I can encourage them to be a help to Daddy with a good attitude, I can admire the cards they bring me, I can speak to them kindly. I can point them to the faithfulness of our Heavenly Father and the lessons we are learning through this trial.  I can glorify God and point my children to Him by the way I conduct myself in times of trial and adversity. I can walk with the Lord even when my body can barely move–and it is absolutely imperative that I do so."

Read her whole story here:

Also, if you are struggling with illness--please leave a comment here, as we would love to pray for healing for you.

Motherhood Is a Calling

Christian mothers carry their children in hostile territory.
When you are in public with them, you are standing with, and defending, the objects of cultural dislike.
You are publicly testifying that you value what God values,

and that you refuse to value what the world values.

You stand with the defenseless and in front of the needy.
You represent everything that our culture hates,
because you represent laying down your life for another—
and laying down your life for another represents the gospel.

Top Secrets for Having a Successful Homeschool

This week I am going to spend a little time talking about homeschooling.

As a veteran homeschool mom and over 13 years of experience, I thought I would share with you some tips I have learned along the way. As a family, we have chosen to homeschool to provide a Christian education and worldview to our children as we shepherd and disciple them.  I know many of you are planning and preparing for the next school year or will be starting soon so I wanted to give a few words of encouragement as reminders, so let's begin:

1. Jesus Christ must be center. We need to know that the purpose of educating is not to gain accolades from the world or gaining riches or honors to impress but instead the most important thing--educating our children as godly seed that will one day bring glory to Him. He is the center of why we learn and all education stems out from there. He also is the head of our school and we bring all our needs and desires to His feet.

2. Pray, pray, pray.  What curriculum should we use? How do we schedule their day? What outside activities will we participate in?  Prayer covers all this and with this we can receive true answers that are best for our own family.

3. Be flexible.  We all love to plan and buy curriculum but we must remember to stay flexible. When I first started out I thought I had to complete workbooks from beginning to end while doing every problem--that was a rigid one-way track to burn out (and all the homeschool mothers said--amen!). Now I know better and will design a lesson around what we need to know, not what the book curriculum designers dictate that I do with my children. Also, if a book is not working for you, don't ever be afraid to toss it and replace it--you'll be glad you did!

4. Stop comparing.  It is so easy to look around at other homeschooling families and compare (everything from homeschool methods, to instruments children play, or even what the children wear!) Try not to compare!  I have seen moms get discouraged feeling as though they couldn't handle homeschooling and then eventually throwing  in the towel for this very reason. The comparison game will only get you feeling down and putting more stress and pressure on your homeschool that God did not intend or perhaps feeling smug that you have it more together than another mom.

5. Plan and yet be willing to throw your plans out the window
. I always recommend planning---and while I used be a fierce list planner as a young mom, I have since learned to plan loosely and allow God to direct our days. If a days schedule gets thrown out the window because of life--then as moms we need to truly be okay with that. Remember, there is always tomorrow. Homeschool moms need not to be so hard on themselves.

6. Laugh, cherish and have fun. I cannot emphasize this enough. Sometimes we  get so serious about homeschooling that we can forget about experiencing the joy that comes with it (wouldn't Satan just love to rob us of this?). Your children need to know they have a happy mom who is willing to have fun and laugh with her children (and sometimes at herself!). I know we will not always be joyous all the time, but we do need to remember that a smile will bless our children and encourage them. We also need to view the broader spectrum of homeschooling and enjoy the blessing of each day and each lesson.

7. Take a break.  Sometimes we need to step back and evaluate. Are we doing too much? Too little? Do we need to get back our focus and perspective? Add some fun into our school? Wise mamas need to know it is okay to take a break sometimes. It is perfectly okay to take a step back and refocus if the end result is moving several steps forward.

8. Choose the best. Don't outdo yourself by joining every sport, club, homeschool group event, etc. Slow down! If we are always on the go, we cannot effectively homeschool or shepherd our children. Be wise were you invest your best energies or your homeschool will suffer. Our family places a special emphasis on family time at home so we can strengthen and build the relationships there.  We know that with more things pulling at our schedule will mean less time for the things that really matter to us.

How to Be Spiritually Minded

Enjoyed reading this by John Piper today:

Realize that millions of people in the other religions of the world are not looking for people
with more American cultural coolness or techno savvy.
They are looking for a “holy man,”
 a “man of God.”

The question will not be,
“Is he quick-witted and fast-talking and clever?”

The question will be:

“Does he pray a lot?
Does he know his holy Book, much of it by heart?
Is he self-denying and focused on God?

Is he powerful in his weakness?”

To My Mom....

Hello Everyone! This is Janai (June’s oldest daughter) hacking into her blog. I wanted to let you all know what an incredible mom I have! And today being her 40th birthday (hint, hint- leave a comment!)-- I wanted to share a little with you. My mom is first of all a child of God-- a daughter of THE High King-- a princess-- and a queen. She is treasured by the most amazing and loving father there ever could be, by her wonderful husband, by me, by all the rest of her children, by family members, by friends, and by people like you. Second, she is a mother to three princesses and five future presidents (yes, be jealous)! Third, she’s a world changer. She can write like it's nobody’s business. She can listen to people who talk with her (which is rare these days). She's constantly trying to grow in her walk with the Lord. She's there if I need her. She's youthful, beautiful, and still has big dreams! We can tease each other and have fun together. Over the weekend, she did her finger nails red, white, and blue for the holiday (which made all of us girls proud of her!). :) She's not afraid to try new things. She's always trying to learn anything she can! I love her!

One thing I got from her is her love of spending time in the cemetery. It's so peaceful there and you can forget life for just a moment. I think there are not enough mom's out there that are doing their job. There are so many children, teens, and adults that wish their mom was involved in their lives someway. That wish they could've seen them graduate. They wish their mom would've been there helping them with relationships or family problems. I am just absolutely blessed to have both my father and mother right here at my side all the time whenever I need them.
***********************************
Thank you, God! Thank you for picking her out of anybody else in the world to be my mother. Thank you for bringing her to You when she most needed You in her life. I could not imagine where I would be if you had not lead her to Your Son, Jesus Christ.  I could not imagine where she or my dad would be if You had not come and saved her--but You had another plan for her life. You had planned her life out from the beginning. I am so thankful for that... She is the best mom anyone could've ever had and I love her to death!

I love you, mom!!! Happy 40th Birthday!!! I am so glad you're getting to live your childhood dreams now!! I feel like crying as I write this. :) Thanks for teaching me everything you ever taught me. I might not understand them all now but one day (hopefully) I will.

You. Are. Seriously. THE. Best.

All My Love,
~Janai

Happy Fourth of July!

The Fourth of July is a wonderful time to create special memories for the family...

I love these simple yet special Fourth of July treats!

(View this and more at The Crafty Crow)

We might try to catch a  parade or BBQ,

print out some coloring pages, mazes and crosswords--

and have a little fun by making simple crafts.

Sometimes we will even go to the beach...

The children just love to watch the fireworks!

How about you?

 Happy Fourth of July!

And I'm proud to be an American,
where at least I know I'm free.
And I won't forget the men who died,
who gave that right to me.

Interview with Sarah Mae-- Best Selling Ebook Author

Meet Sarah Mae

Sarah Mae, listed as one of The Christian Broadcasting Networks Six Women Leaders to Follow on Twitter, is an influential Christian blogger, conference host, and author of the bestselling eBook 31 Days to Clean, which sold over 11,000 copies in its first two months of release. Because of her drive to inspire women to hold fast to biblical ideals, Sarah Mae has established herself as a social media expert by cultivating blogs and websites that have impacted thousands of women all over the world. She is a self-made popular mom blogger, (establishing four national blogs with a rapidly growing audience of 100,000 followers a month), the founder and co-host of the Relevant conference, a national Christian women’s blogging conference that has sold out first its first and second year, and publishing an eBook that quickly became a bestseller, as well as becoming a contributing writer to DaySpring, (a division of Hallmark).

She has just recently released her latest ebook:
How to Market and Sell Your Ebook

We were able to get a quick interview with her:

Q:  Welcome, Sarah Mae! Thank you so much for agreeing to do this interview. I'll get right to the questions: Why did you write this eBook and what is it's purpose? What are you hoping to achieve?

SM: I wrote this eBook so that the "everyday" person could learn how to market and sell their eBook without having to pay a ton of money to learn how. My goal is that people will be inspired and motivated that they can earn an income with eBooks...if they can offer people what they *need* in a way that has not been delivered to them yet. At the heart of it, this eBook is about communicating your passion to others in a new way, and then getting your ideas to the world.

Q: Why should people buy this eBook?

SM: People should buy this eBook because I share what I've learned in my own eBook publishing journey. I tell you exactly how to market, sell, and launch your eBook in order to reach the most people with your ideas.

Q. Your last ebook 31 Days to Clean skyrocketed to Amazon's bestseller list. Would you please share with us, one of your secrets to successfully marketing an eBook?

SM: Be everywhere (but I have so many more tips! You've got to get the eBook so you can learn so much more!).

Q. What lies ahead in the future for you? Will you publish more eBooks or will you pursue other goals and/or dreams you would like to fulfill?

SM: No more eBooks for awhile. My plans are to rest, and then gear up for homeschooling and Relevant.

Q: Sarah Mae, thank you so much for this interview and for the valuable new eBook you put out for us. I have already had the chance to read through it and looking forward to sharing my review with my readers next week. We pray that God would bless your endeavors and the success of this eBook as well!
